Review of the Costa Adeje Gran in Costa Adeje

Overall
The Costa Adeje Gran is a five star hotel with no pretensions. Basically it’s friendly, comfortable and easy on the eye with some interesting features. It’s a good place to wind down and relax in.

Where is the Costa Adeje Gran?
The Costa Adeje Gran sits on the hill above above the Del Duque area of Costa Adeje, opposite the car park where the market is held. Playa Fañabe is about a 15 minute walk away whilst Playa del Duque is slightly closer. There are bars and restaurants within easy walking plus there’s a shopping centre, home to the new Wonder Food Market, next door. The stylish Plaza Del Duque Commercial Centre is a few minutes walk away, downhill towards the coast.

What is the Costa Adeje Gran Like?
The exterior of the Costa Adeje Gran has a slight colonial feel, with subtropical plants fronting huge windows which keep the extensive foyer area bright and sunny. The entrance is rather grand, maybe that should be ‘gran’, with a calming fountain framed by sweeping staircases leading to intimate seating areas in ornate iron gazebos. It’s open and airy with loads of space. There’s an equally airy bar with an outside terrace. Most eye-catching is the liquidy looking ‘skylight’ ceiling which is also the bottom of  one of the swimming pools.

There are various pools; the biggest two are located in a main courtyard that has views which ‘leapfrog’ the lower part of Costa Adeje to reveal a panoramic scene of the sea that includes La Gomera on the horizon (there are good sunsets from here). These are the prize sunbathing positions, but there’s also a less populated adults only pool (with bar) on the roof.

There are a mass of activities to keep guests of all ages occupied, including a neat, sandy children’s playground; spa; gym; pool room (like an old fashioned billiard hall), tennis courts, crazy golf… you get the picture, there’s a lot to do.

What are the Bedrooms Like?
Rooms are good sized with a seating area from which to watch the large flat screen TV (channels to please various nationalities, including British faves). The décor is on the conservative side with muted tones. A nice little touch is the selection the old prints of Tenerife hanging on the walls. The bathroom is roomy with a hair-dryer and plenty of toiletries. Our balcony overlooked the pool area and had views of the sea and along the south coast; it was a good place to chill with a glass of wine. There’s good free wifi in the rooms (something which is important to us). In a sentence I’d say it was a pleasantly comfortable space to spend time in.

How Good is the Food?
We were already fans of the gourmet restaurant La Laja and think it a cut above, and better value, than most of the restaurants in this part of Costa Adeje. The buffet is also better than many hotel buffets we’ve tried, with a varied selection that included some imaginative dishes and a cheese counter with a decent selection of world cheeses. What impressed was that individual dishes were kept well stocked, with regular fresh reinforcements even towards the end of dining times. There was also a noticeable difference in what was available between lunch and dinner. The breakfast buffet was equally enjoyable with plenty of choice to please fans of both continental and fried breakfasts, even the churros were nice and crisp.

What is the Best Thing About the Costa Adeje Gran?
What stands out for me is that it feels like a sincerely friendly hotel. I felt relaxed all the time I was there. That might sound like an odd thing to say as that should be a hotel’s job, but passing time in the hotel just felt effortless. It’s an affordable five star hotel with an above average buffet and restaurant.

Who Would it Suit Best?
The Costa Adeje Gran has the personality and amenities to appeal to couples of all ages as well as families. It’s a good all rounder.
